Welcome Dinner Project Co-Coordinator – NSW

Remuneration: We aim for this to be a 12 hour/week employed role but until we secure funding we are looking for a volunteer for between 6-10 hours per week to begin immediately. In addition, phone and travel reimbursements are available to a maximum of $100 per month in total. Please note, this is likely to become a long-term position with additional hours once further funding is secured.

The Welcome Dinner Project is a major initiative of non-profit organisation joiningthedots. The Welcome Dinner Project has been connecting newly arrived people with established Australians over pot-luck dinners in local homes since March 2013. The initiative is well established in NSW, with regular home and community dinners taking place. A dedicated team of volunteers have been trained as Welcome Dinner facilitators throughout Sydney and there are many existing networks and beneficial partnerships already formed with like-minded organisations.

The Welcome Dinner Project in NSW is currently looking for a Coordinator to share the role with the current coordinator who is needing to reduce her hours but will work collaboratively with the appointed person. The primary responsibility of the role is to coordinate a local network of volunteers to host and promote Welcome Dinners in Sydney, extending to regional cities when the opportunity arises. Both Coordinators will be supported and resourced by joiningthedots and collaborate with the other Welcome Dinner Project team staff around Australia. Initial induction and ongoing training will be provided.

 Summary of role:

  • Coordinate some aspects of administration and planning for Welcome Dinners in local homes and community venues, primarily overseeing local coordinators to undertake this work
  • Support existing volunteers and continue to recruit and train additional Welcome Dinner Facilitators
  • Communicate with key community partners, oversee promotions, and attend networking meetings or related events.
  • Oversee existing collaborations and partnerships and prepare periodic reports
  • Continue to build partnerships with key agencies, groups and institutions.
  • Collaborate with the other Welcome Dinner Coordinators in NSW.
  • Coordinate evaluation processes.
  • You will also be required to take part in bi-monthly national team meetings (online) and an annual gathering with the National Team 

Desired Skills and Attributes:

  • A passion for creating a culture of welcome in Australia.
  • Friendly, outgoing people-person, with an ability to communicate effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
  • Experience in coordinating, motivating and empowering volunteers.
  • High degree of self-motivation, initiative and attention to detail.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, database management and google apps.
  • Familiarity with Sydney communities.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a range of institutional partners.
  • Experience with delivering pitches or public speaking skills.
  • Some understanding of the issues being faced by newly arrived people to Australia.
  • Access to your own vehicle would be an advantage.
